Cultural Significance

During segregation in the 1950s, NW 18th Avenue in Liberty City became a cultural refuge for Black artists who were barred from staying on Miami Beach after sunset. Alongside Brownsville and Overtown, the area earned the nickname “Broadway,” filled with juke joints, clubs, and creative spaces. Today, under the leadership of Miami Dade County Commissioner Keon Hardemon, NW 18th Avenue stands as a recognized cultural corridor, honoring both legacy and contemporary Miami artists through street namings and preservation efforts.
